President's Letter
Greetings,
My name is Kemuel Russell and I am a third year student studying Biology with minors in Psychology and Spanish and I am extremely honored to be serving as the President for the African American Student Union (AASU) at Georgia Tech for the 2021-2022 academic year.
I have been involved with AASU since my first year at Georgia Tech and over the past two years, I have developed lasting friendships and felt a sense of community within our organization. AASU’s mission statement “... to improve the Black experience at Georgia Tech by providing uplifting and entertaining events while exchanging integral knowledge and culture to the entire student body...” is what grew my passion for the organization and drove my decision to take on a leadership role. I believe in what we do for all Black students on campus and I would like AASU to continue to serve as a pillar of the Georgia Tech Black community and impact incoming students as it did me.
This year, my main focus for AASU is increasing a sense of unity among all Black students at Georgia Tech which is especially important now that we are heading back to residential instruction. As our membership grows beyond African Americans to all Black students, it is our duty to ensure that each student improves themself through professional, social, and personal achievement, thereby advancing towards the betterment of the community. I also hope to build and nourish community ties with nearby institutions, companies, and businesses in the Metro-Atlanta Area. By doing this, I will develop and maintain an expansive network and platform that not only empowers our community but also promotes solidarity within and beyond the gates of Georgia Institute of Technology.
Our strength comes from the work of our students and from the courage, vigor, and sacrifice of those who paved the way for us. We are committed to recognizing the beauty and diversity that is the Black community all while fostering an unwavering pride in our history, our future, and ourselves. I am grateful for your support and investment into all of us. Through your support, we are able to uplift and support our students. I am so excited for the upcoming year and I look forward to working with you all.
Thank you!
Kemuel Russell
